Leading up to the run weather forecasters had predicted rain for Sunday and that proved to be the case as it was a very wet departure for me as I left Greensborough.
However on my way down to Polly’s place in Cockatoo the rain cleared up nicely after I had ridden through Yarra Glen. Luckily the rain kept away for the rest of the day.
The forecast must have definitely affected numbers as we only had nine starters for this the 4th Stocky’s (memorial) Run. After Polly welcomed us we enjoyed a cuppa and a natter and it was soon time to get going.
It was pleasing to see that Polly’s son Glen was among us on this his first run and proudly astride Stocky’s ‘82 BMW R80 GS. John actually bought this bike new from the BMW factory in Germany and Polly still has the original receipts.
Graham Boulter our ride leader gave us a briefing before leading us out on our 100klm run. This run was to some extent a reverse of last year’s run but with quite a few variations. We headed up through Avonsleigh before riding down the Macclesfield road to Yellingbo then West on Beenak Road over to Wandin North.
We then rode up towards the Silvan Dam area then riding down through Monbulk with the ride getting better and better with each passing kilometre.
Further on we had our first regroup and toilet stop but not sure where. Travelling from place to place up in the Dandenong area always confuses me somewhat but what I do know is that it is a great place for very pleasant classic bike riding. We then rode over to Emerald and Narre Warren East before skirting the Mighty Cardinia Reservoir pausing for a group photo at Elephant Rock in Dewhurst.
Our final leg was down through Mount Burnett (threw a drive chain here once, know the exact spot) and then back to Cockatoo.
This is the 4th time now Graham has taken us on Stocky’s run over much of the very picturesque Dandenongs and again very well executed. Another lovely run and projected distance and timing spot on.
On our return to Polly’s quite a few members had turned up, most by car and three on bikes.
We all enjoyed a very nice BBQ and as usual enough salads and sweets to feed an army.
Thank you once again Polly for your hospitality along with the helpers, Graham for yet another great run and Colin and Julie Sullivan for back up trailer.
