Club Ride to Marong PDF Print E-mail
marong09The ‘magnificent seven’ riders along with our back-up driver Graham Boulter met at the Shell servo on Mickleham Rd Gladstone Park in cool conditions but the sun did pop out shortly before the off. This run was our new president Paul Caine’s first lead rider role and he duly briefed us before we headed north up Mickleham Rd. We then headed west along Somerton Rd before again riding north along Oaklands Rd which leads into Konagaderra Rd and then brings us out to the Lancefield Rd junction. A straight run up the C325 through Romsey, Lancefield, Nulla Vale, Emu Flat and onto Tooborac where we then headed up the Northern Hwy to “The Gaggle of Geese” café in Heathcote for morning tea. The sun had left us shortly after the start and the run thus far was mostly in cool and overcast conditions so the warm stove in the café was most welcome for a thaw out. Rejuvenated and warmed up, it was then a quick run up the McIvor Hwy to Bendigo.  It is here where our President decidingly passed his lead rider accreditation by guiding us faultlessly through the city and out to the Marong venue without a single wrong turn. Well done Paul, you succeeded where some past leaders failed!I think that the amount of exhibits at Marong increases with each passing year and for me the ‘Federation Picnic Meet’ is always an absolute delight. Apart from the regulars there is always plenty of ‘new old’ stock to goggle at not previously seen at Marong. Long live Marong! The ride home was quite enjoyable. Warren and I swapped bikes for the ride over to Malden via Lockwood South. In Maldon we had a brief stop while Warren had a fuel top up. Then back on our own bikes and over to Castlemain, through Chewton before turning on to the old Calder Hwy for an afternoon tea stop at Malmsbury. After downing the biggest cappuccino I’d ever seen (six bucks! yes, this mug asked for a mug but got a soup bowl full of the stuff! (See pic). Leaving the bakery we then we then went back about half a kay to turn on to the Daylesford Rd riding through Drummond and Denver before looping back to Tylden via Spring Hill and over to Woodend. From here it was back onto the old and then the new Calder Hwy for a speedy return to home splitting up at the Western Ring Rd fly off. Thankfully apart from a couple of stalls at lights (my fault), the Beeza ran faultlessly all day and I was home at 5:25pm. Great day, great run and except for a few spots on our visors, no rain. Well done and thank you Paul for a job well done, your club ride leader certificate is in the post. Thanks also to Graham for giving up a ride to give the four classics the security of a trailer behind his beaut ute.
