This run was promoted in both the December and March Sprockets as one to get over this bugbear of “classics are not rode on club runs as the rides are too far/fast”. Well this short/slow ride did not bring out more classics than the ones that usually go on club Sunday and mid week runs. Nothing wrong there, but these riders go on the ‘far/fast” ones too so realistically the plan did not work. Admittedly there were the factors of cancellation of the Vintage Japanese M/C rally, (we planned to visit), the Scoresby swap meet and the two charity rides for the bushfire appeal, all on April 5.
Can you see something odd in this photo? of Phil's BMW R80GS. See more photos in the Gallery.
However the participants enjoyed the short, 80Km prior lunch/30Km after, ride which left most of the afternoon free for other activities. Leaving Chirnside S/S after bodging up a temporary main earth on Phillip’s bike, we cruised the fruit, veg, flower growing area in the Monbulk-Silvan-Wandin East area (all that lovely rich chocolate earth-some of it spilt onto the roads). Morning stop was at Woori Yallock bakery where Ross joined the ride after a hard night (yes slept there!) at the Scoresby swap. Then it was onto Healesville for lunch, at yet another bakery, via Gruyere, Coldstream and Yarra Glen. Around the latter, new green has replaced the black burn in the paddocks but many fences are still down. The ride was then back to Chirnside via Yarra Glen and past the Lilydale aerodrome to finish at 1.30 PM (told you it was short?and slow, it was so slow sometimes the bikes threatened to topple over!). Thanks to Graham for back up duties and Richard for rear riding.
