See Galleery, 2007, Cockatoo Xmas for photos
There were plenty of classics in attendance and a perfect cool morning for the start of our morning run from our President John Stock and Polly’s lovely rural property in Cockatoo.
Graham Boulter led us out for this morning run. John later took us on the after lunch run. The cool morning was very welcome after some of the hot weather we had experienced earlier in the week. First we rode up to Yellingbo then Silvan, Mnt Evelyn and Montrose before climbing up through Kalorama. What a great morning for this run with the different smells of the trees, flowers etc intoxicating me through a slightly raised vista.
Can’t identify what the various greenery, bushes and flowers were but as we then rode down from Olinda, Sherbrooke and Kallista I did know the aroma of moist gum leaves of course (eucalyptus) and then fresh hay on the flats in the Macclesfield area. This is the life and what a great morning for a run up here and particularly on a classic bike. We ended up on the run down from Emerald to Cockatoo completing a loop on the Woori Yallock Rd back to John and Polly’s place for lunch. You couldn’t ask for a better mornings run. Well done Graham.
I was pleased to see my occasional riding mate Bruce Ferrier had joined us for lunch and the afternoons run. A broken throttle cable on his AJS was the cause of him missing the start of the morning run. Bruce was able to replace it with a spare he carried and arrived in plenty of time for lunch. Good one Bruce. Lunch was a very pleasant affair with Polly supplying everything we needed and more to go with our meat and sausages. Again, this is the life!
After we had all had our lunch John led us out and we meandered over to Launching Place via Gembrook then up to the Warburton Highway, down to Warburton via Yarra Junction before diverting on the pleasant climb up the Western side of Mnt Donna Buang. Higher up we actually rode through clouds (a rare experience) and for a while it turned quite cold. Up here the road soon changed to damp gravel and on the way down care was taken to keep well over to the left on the sharp bends as we met a few cars on their way up from the Healesville end, some taking a bit more of their share of this fairly precarious road. We all arrived down into the other valley unscathed to then ride West from one end of the Healesville township to the other before turning South on the Healesville- Koo Wee Rup Rd, crossing the Warburton Hwy and back to base at Cockatoo. Towards the end of the afternoon run the old A10 was suffering a bit of clutch slip . On road adjusting brought no improvement so when I get around to it a pull down to have a look at the clutch plates will be in order. Maybe another visit to Modak! Not withstanding that I thoroughly enjoyed both runs and Graham and John are to be congratulated. The highlight of this day for me was there were very close to 80% classics. Fantastic! Thank you John and Polly for once again being such good hosts.
Thanks also to Elaine Watson who once again performed back-up trailer duties for us with not one bike hitching a ride.
