Nine riders assembled for the start in Bayswater North and after Ed’s briefing we were up and rolling under sunny skies. We headed up on the Mountain Hwy Road up to Sassafras then through Olinda and Monbulk before riding down through the Silvan area, Wandin East and then taking the Beenak road over to Yellingbo. What a great day for a ride, weather perfect and everywhere as green as it will ever get. From Yellingbo we took the Healesville-Koo-Wee –Rup Road crossing the Warburton Hwy at Woori Yallock and took the Maroondah
Hwy riding through Healesville and up into the Yarra Ranges National Park climbing up and over the picture postcard winding Black Spur. There is no better time to ride though this lovely area than on a day like this. Everywhere fresh and green after early morning mists. However riding down we just had to be a little cautious of those damp spots on a few of the corners still in shade. Down off the mountain then along through Fernshaw and Narbethong to our ‘Brunch’ stop at the Marysville Bakery. Building still ongoing after Black Saturday, a group of shops nearing completion just up from the bakery and some new homes dotted around in various stages of build. Still no petrol station except for the self serve ATM style one in the main street. A new police station has been up and running for a while now but I’m wondering if Marysville will ever get a replacement pub? The old pub had a great atmosphere and was the venue for many a motorcycling club run. Remember the old bike sticking out of the wall and bike memorabilia inside? After our relaxing ‘brunch’ we rode another ‘up and over’, this time the infamous Reefton Spur and only encountering the odd car and a couple of timber trucks on the way down plus one lone motorcyclist powering up the mountain fairly swiftly but in good control.
A pleasant run along the Warburton Hwy through Reefton and McMahons Creek to our fuel stop at Warburton, a bit of a natter and then off for the final leg up the Highway. Finally a short stop at Wandin North where I said my goodbyes to the group and headed North for Gruyere, Coldstream, Yarra Glen, Christmas Hills, Kangaroo Ground, Diamond Creek and home to Greensborough. Another great run (thanks Ed), and perfect weather. My total kays 278.
