Once again the Geelong section has run another successful event, as per usual Sandra Lauder and her helpers made the start of the event very welcoming with their homemade soups and bread rolls. At Ballarat five bikes left at 9 AM to head to Geelong it was a little overcast, but showed signs of clearing, we arrived at the Corio Fire Station at 10 AM about the same time as the riders from Melbourne arrived, it was very pleasing to see a good rollup of Melbourne riders this year. It wasn't long and we were all inside making short work of the hot soup (two choices) both homemade and the bread rolls. After half an hour it was time to head off, and the sky was looking less promising than when we left Ballarat, the black clouds were starting to bank up, I thought to myself looks like a wet bum is on today's menu!!
Firstly we headed towards Gheringhap then across some lovely little winding country roads to Murgheboluc on to the Hamilton highway and into Inverleigh for a regroup, at this point in time John Killingworth discovered something in his tyre which was causing a slow leak, up to the servo with a tyre plug and a couple of helpers and all was well. We left there and rode on to Winchelsea, from there onto Barwon Heads, don't ask me to explain how we got there as we travelled all back roads and it was an enjoyable ride. As we left Winchelsea heading to Barwon Heads every time I looked up the sky seemed to be getting blacker, and blacker and you could see rain in the distance, I kept thinking to myself were going to run into it at any moment, but we seemed to be able to skirt around it and got to our lunch destination dry, the only misfortune we had was Stan on his gold flash outfit, seems he got a puncture in his front tyre as he was riding along and that put him into the grass on the edge of the road, so Stan and his little passenger in the sidecar were out of action for the rest of the day. At Barwon Heads lunch was a very casual, some went to the hotel, some went to the fish and chip shop on the corner, and others wandered off down the street, it was excellent as everybody seemed to do their own thing and we all gathered back at our bikes around the same time ready to head off as a group once again. The ride back to Geelong was fairly simple, the Drysdale-Ocean Grove Road on to Portarlington-Geelong Road and into Geelong, we rode around the waterfront and back to our starting point in Corio. Once again after a short chit chat it was time to head off home, we seemed to have been able to defy the rain all day so I thought the more we stand around and talk the more chance our luck will run out, the Ballarat riders were heading off but I didn't go with them, I went back with the Melbourne riders as I had to visit my Vincent, it was in the critical care ward at Neal Videans, that is another story! So to all the Geelong members who helped organise and run, the day was great, also very heartening to see a good number of classic bikes turn up, and people from a wide variety of areas.
Hope to see you again next year...Burger
