Ed did well in calling off the ride originally scheduled for the 4th as the weather leading up to and on the day was pretty wet and windy. No trouble this day though and nine of us met under only slightly overcast skies at the Shell servo at Mickleham Rd Gladstone Park and we were off just after 9:am. We headed north straight up Mickleham Rd meandering through the Wildwood district north of Bulla then riding through the northern end of Sunbury and almost into Riddells Creek before deflecting across and up through New Gisborne arriving into the rural ‘Toorak ‘ end of Macedon. Were talking exclusive country properties around here worth millions with large acreage including one exotic horse breeding stud complete with it’s own time trial track and kilometres of white rail fencing. Be quick, there’s a property or two on the market up here! We then rode up through and over Mount Macedon and came in the back way to Woodend having morning tea at our favourite bakery opposite the servo station. Suitably fed and watered we now we rode out on the Tylden Road and at Spring Hill zig zagged our way north almost into Kyneton before deflecting over to Lauriston and then made a couple of tourist stops at the old mill and multi arched bluestone railway bridge in Malmsbury. The bridge was built in 1860 and during it’s construction supplied work for up to six hundred men. This well built and imposing bridge is still carrying regular passenger trains on the Bendigo/Melbourne line. Could do with a few bridge projects right now in this state, particularly putting roads over every railway in the state including the suburbs! The bridge can be viewed up behind the public gardens and lake at the Bendigo end of Malmsbury on the left hand side of the old Calder highway. Ed then led us down to Trentham then back to the bakery in Woodend via East Trentham. All great bike riding roads up this way, whichever route you take. After a good lunch we headed down the old Calder highway then onto the new highway to get home before the mad suburban peak home runs. We were making up the time we had spent chasing a rider who had missed a corner marshal plus languishing at the old mill and then the bridge at Malmsbury, though both quite interesting and well worth the time. Great roads, nice weather, yet another excellent midweek run. Thanks Eddie.
