Battery Charger - Warning PDF Print E-mail

A FIRE WARNING------------JACK YOUDAN

I, like many club members have purchased battery “trickle” chargers from our Regalia system.

The model is ZYLUX 900 (0.9A) and are low- cost versus others on the market, several have worked well for me, except the experience below.

On fully charging the Triumph’s 12V battery with a 2.7A capacity other-make charger, I connected the ZYLUX intending to leave the system on “trickle”.

Having a thing about leaving electricals switched on, I checked within an hour ( as is usual) to find the charger’s + and - connecting wires burnt out (no fuse in these wires when using the alligator clips wiring).

Having the battery fully tested (voltage and amps) showed it was OK, hence the charger was faulty.

Although this could have been a one-off charger failure, the fire potential was so enormous I will be checking frequently (half to one hour) with future alligator clip wiring use of the ZYLUX………no leaving it to trickle-charge overnight!

Alternatively one can use the “permanent” (fused) wiring to give added protection, (although the unit has a circuit breaker) but is inconvenient in using the charger on more than one battery.

Jack Youdan.
