As we hurtle toward Christmas 2009, planning for the coming year is winding up so that we look forward to a continuing feast of rides and activities for Club members. We do, however, have a developing issue that causes frustration to ride organizers so this month I am writing to invite all Club members to reflect (and please comment) on the issue of involvement, or more particularly non-involvement in Club activities.
With nearly 400 members, surely the Club has some riders. Imagine yourself (and there are some who have completed the task of preparing for the monthly ride who will not have to simply imagine – they know what is involved) spending hours planning a monthly ride; riding the route to make sure all is well with the roads; planning the stop points; arranging the meal break points and chasing hard to find a reliable person to be the back-up trailer driver (at the very least that is a good day’s work). Then comes the sunny Sunday morning and after all that hard work you are joined by barely a handful of enthusiastic bikers ready to set out and enjoy the day ahead. Utter dismay, frustration and even fleeting thoughts such as ‘why bother?’ are likely to be part of the emotional wash. So spare a thought for the run organizers and recognize that the greatest compliment and contribution to the success of the club and these well thought out and thoroughly prepared rides is to BE THERE and join in…. October saw a short slower ride specifically for all those that have been demanding such a ride. Where were you? Less than 10 club members took advantage of the sites and scenery of the Peninsula. You could start now with whatever is needed to get ‘old faithful’ out and running so that you and your presence is felt and enjoyed at as many of the upcoming rides as possible. If it is a 2-day ride/rally and you can only spare 1 day, come along on the day you can. That sort of commitment will really show regard for the faithful hardworking organizers.
On a different note, the committee would like to invite you all to the Christmas meeting/BBQ to send out the year in style. To entice all members, the Club will be providing free sausages and rolls so come along and share some good old Christmas Cheer ‘on the club’. Please call or mail to confirm that you will be attending, as the caterers need numbers. Plans are underway for a 2010 Picnic Day with the theme ‘Bring Out Your Dead!’. We want to see all those hidden treasures going or not and registered or not. We also propose to have an area set aside for those people that want to sell or swap bikes or parts. Proposed date (to be confirmed later) 28th March 2010.
